OCT 29: Quebec City, Quebec - First Time

Today, we were on the Grand Tour of Quebec, which sounded ambitious considering the size of the province of Quebec, and the tour was only 7.5 hours long.

We began with a walking tour of the city's historic center.

Right after I took this picture, a young man standing on a staircase nearby shouted at our guide that he should be speaking in French, then continued up the stairs.  The admonishment would have been more emphatic if the heckler had not said it in English.

Back on the bus, we were on our way to the Basilica Sainte-Anne-du-Beaupre, about a 30-minute drive outside the city.

Next was lunch at L'Auberge Baker. From the number of locals there, it was the real deal.
We drove along a back road looking at 16th- 19th-century houses with their exterior root cellars and bread ovens. One even had a chapel.
We crossed the north branch of the St. Lawrence River onto Île d'Orléans, where we drove around a small part of the island to get a feel for the mix of homes and agriculture.
Our next stop was at Montmorency Falls. It is 80 feet taller than Niagara Falls.
Having not learned our lesson on yesterday's hike, we climbed some 200 (of 487) for a better view.
Hobbling back onto the bus, we had a driving tour through the upper old city.
I did not get any decent pictures from the bus, so readers of this blog will just have to wait until the next time Pam & I are in Quebec City. This will be three days from now.
As the ship departed for Montreal, I got a picture of Hotel Frontenac, where we will stay when we return here.
We stayed in the forward lounge, getting our first daytime view of moving up the St. Lawrence River. It was then off to pack, have dinner, and finish packing so our big bag would be in the corridor on time. Having accomplished that requirement a bit early enabled me to complete this preliminary post.
