About the Pictures

As an experiment, I took all my pictures on this trip using my Samsung Galaxy S23+ cell phone. In general, I was pleased with the quality of the pictures, given that I did not intend to significantly magnify them (i.e., make large prints).

After the fact, there are a few that I may want to print. We will see how that goes.

I confess that I hedged my bets by taking a DSLR (digital single-lens reflex) camera with me, but staying true to my experiment, I did not use it.

The biggest problem I noticed was some lens barrel distortion. This is "a geometric distortion that occurs when straight lines near an image's edges appear curved or bent outwards. This effect can make images appear distorted, particularly when photographing subjects with straight lines, such as architecture or landscape scenes." (iphotography.com)

Taking night pictures could be tricky, sometimes requiring PRO mode, but night pictures are tricky even with an expensive DSLR with a pricy lens.

The freedom of not having to carry around a camera easily outweighed the advantages.   However, it is less fun to use my phone than a camera, so I will probably continue to travel with one.

Reminder: Not all cellphone cameras are created equal. My cellphone is purported to have the best camera on the market.
